In the welding workshop of the Malaysia East Coast Rail Link (ECRL) project, located in the suburbs of Kuantan, Malaysia, the production line built by China Communication Construction Company Limited (CCCC) is operating efficiently. Here, Gunasiran, a 40-year-old Malaysian serving as the welding supervisor, wears a gray work suit and a red safety helmet, carefully inspecting every aspect of the rail welding process to ensure the smooth operation of the production line.

Gunasiran boasts extensive welding experience. Since 2013, he has served as a mobiles flash welding machine operator on several projects built by CCCC, including the Ampang Light Rail Transit Extension Line and the Kuala Lumpur Mass Rapid Transit Phase 2 (MRT2) project in Malaysia. These experiences have laid a solid foundation for his work on the ECRL project.

The ECRL project is regarded as a "land bridge" connecting Malaysia's east and west coasts, with a design length of over 600 kilometers. To lay this railway, all 500-meter-long steel rails need to be welded in the welding workshop and then transported to the site by long rail transport trains. Gunasiran and his team play a vital role here, ensuring that every steel rail meets high-quality standards.

The equipment on the production line is all made in China, including rail derusting machines, fixed flash welding machines, induction heat treatment machines, four-way straightening machines, and weld seam grinding machines. These devices are not only efficient but also highly precise and stable, providing a strong guarantee for producing high-quality long steel rails.

The welded long steel rails will be used for seamless tracks, which is a major highlight of the ECRL project. Compared with traditional jointed tracks, seamless tracks can greatly improve the safety and comfort of train operations. Therefore, the welding work of 500-meter-long steel rails is crucial to the success of the entire project.
