On December 21, local time, Serbian President Vucic visited the construction site of Vilbast Bridge in Serbia, spoke highly of the construction progress of the Hungary-Serbia railway project, and expressed gratitude to the Chinese builders. Serbian Minister of Construction, Transport and Infrastructure Vesic, Chinese Ambassador to Serbia Li Ming and representatives of Chinese enterprises accompanied them to inspect the construction.
Vucic said that by the end of 2024, the entire line in Serbia will be completed, and it will only take 75 minutes to travel from the capital Belgrade to the border city of Subotica. "This is a big change for the Serbian people and the whole country. It means a lot to the local population."
Vucic also expressed his gratitude to Chinese enterprises and builders. He said that Chinese builders have invested a lot of energy in the Hungary-Serbia railway project and achieved excellent results.
The Hungary-Serbia Railway connects Budapest, the capital of Hungary, and Belgrade, the capital of Serbia, with a total length of 341.7 kilometers, of which the Serbian section is 183.1 kilometers long. The construction adopts CPG500 and BLCP500 rail laying units independently developed in China. The former realizes the synchronous laying of long rail and sleeper, while the latter meets the needs of the adjacent two lines of rail laying, significantly improving the efficiency and safety of operation.
As the first Chinese railway in Europe and a key project of the “Belt and Road” initiative, the Hungary-Serbia Railway has realized the first alignment between Chinese standards and EU UIC standards, and will significantly shorten the travel time between the capitals of Hungary and Serbia to three hours after completion. The construction of the railway not only promotes regional economic and social development, strengthens North-South connectivity in the Central and Eastern Europe region, but also promotes economic prosperity along the route, which is of great strategic significance.
At present, the construction operations are progressing in an orderly manner, and the builders are going all out to ensure that the project node objectives are achieved on schedule.
The Hungary-Serbia Railway is the "first order" for Chinese railways to enter Europe and a key project of China's "Belt and Road" Initiative. It is the first railway to connect Chinese railway standards with the European Union's UIC standards. Upon the completion and opening of the entire railway, the travel time between the capitals of Hungary and Serbia will be shortened from 8 hours to 3 hours. Meanwhile, this railway provides new impetus for regional economic and social development. It is also of great significance in strengthening the north-south connectivity in Central and Eastern Europe and driving the economic development of areas along the railway.
